Bayern Munich equaled the Bundesliga’s all-time single-season goal scoring record on Saturday when Jamal Musiala headed the side into a 1-0 lead against hosts St. Pauli.
Musiala’s goal in the ninth minute was the 101st, equaling the record from Bayern’s 1971/72 season. The match is underway and there are five games left in the season with Bayern, who will almost certainly break the record.
The Bundesliga leaders, who are preparing to host Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final next week after their 2-1 win in Spain in midweek, are in with a chance of winning three titles after also reaching the semi-finals of the German Cup.
Leverkusen scores Dortmund
Earlier in the day, Bayer Leverkusen secured a crucial 1-0 win at second-place Borussia Dortmund thanks to captain Robert Andrich’s first-half winner to stay in the mix for a top-four finish with five games to play.
The 2024 Bundesliga champions are now fifth with 52 points, one behind fourth-placed VfB Stuttgart, who host Hamburg SV on Sunday. The top four teams qualify for next season’s Champions League.
It was a disappointing afternoon for Dortmund, who found themselves in trouble through Serhou Guirassy in the 83rd, but also saw their defender Nico Schlotterbeck jeered by the home fans, who were unhappy with his delays before he finally signed a contract extension this week.
The club from the Ruhr area is in second place with 64 points with five games to go.
