The fate of the Premier League title hangs in the balance on Sunday as Arsenal look to halt an alarming slump and hold off Pep Guardiola’s attack on Manchester City.
Mikel Arteta’s Gunners still hold a six-point lead at the top of the table but have swept across all competitions in recent weeks, putting their quest for a first league title in 22 years in jeopardy.
City’s victory when the sides met in the League Cup final last month has capped a run of just one win in five games for Arsenal.
That also included an FA Cup exit to second-tier Southampton and a crucial home defeat to Bournemouth last weekend, which gave City new hope in the title race.
Arsenal are the only English team left standing in the Champions League, but even reaching the semi-finals was disappointing as they edged past Sporting Lisbon 1-0 in two legs.
The leader is worn down by a brutal schedule and also hampered by injury.
Bukayo Saka will miss the trip to the Etihad Stadium, while captain Martin Odegaard and first-choice wing-backs Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori are doubts.
Still, Arteta is trying to keep his players focused on the opportunity that awaits, rather than the fear of another title shot slipping away.
«We see this as a big opportunity for us,» Guardiola’s former assistant said at his pre-match press conference.
“We have earned the right to be in this position and be a challenge, with a chance to win, against arguably the best team and manager this competition has ever seen.”
Arsenal have finished second each of the last three seasons and history could well repeat itself.
In both the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons, City overtook the Gunners after Arsenal had started the season stronger.
City’s early exit from the Champions League has given them a week off to prepare and Guardiola’s men are gaining momentum as Arsenal falter.
Since winning the League Cup, City have beaten Liverpool 4-0 to reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup and Chelsea 3-0.
«If you could buy confidence in a supermarket, we would buy it immediately. It is one of the most important aspects,» Guardiola said of his side’s sudden revival.
«The reality is that there are still seven games to go in the Premier League and that is the decisive moment.»
City are just nine games away from equaling their own feat of becoming the only English side to win the domestic treble seven years ago.
They are the heavy favorites to add the FA Cup to the League Cup, with Southampton reaching the last four next weekend.
And it controls its own fate in the title race.
With victories over Arsenal and Burnley in midweek, City top the rankings for the first time this year.
«We all know the importance of this match. It’s like a final,» said City striker Erling Haaland. “It’s probably the biggest and best game there will be, so hopefully it will be a great game.”
