Champions League-bound Aston Villa will close one end of the stadium next season for construction to take capacity above 50,000 before hosting the European Championships in 2028.
The Birmingham club announced on Tuesday an accelerated timetable for long-planned renovations to the North Stand, which will reduce the stadium capacity to around 37,000 next season.
Villa are sitting well in fourth place in the Premier League with five rounds to go before the next Champions League, which guarantees four home games in the main phase.
At the 2028 European Championship, which is being jointly organized by Great Britain and Ireland, Villa Park will host four matches, including one in the round of 16. The 1996 edition in England featured a quarter-final match between four.
“By completing the work within one season, the club will limit the disruption to one season rather than extending it over two seasons,” Aston Villa said in a statement.
Villa Park attracted 43,000 spectators in the Premier League this season and 41,662 last week when coach Unai Emery’s side eliminated Bologna in the quarter-final of the Europa League.
