Manchester City guides Arsenal to the top of the Premier League; Burnley are relegated

Manchester City ended Arsenal’s six-month stay at the Premier League summit and condemned Burnley to relegation on Wednesday with a difficult 1-0 win at Turf Moor.

Erling Haaland’s clinical finish after five minutes could have paved the way for a boost to City’s goal difference, but they lacked incisiveness as Burnley dug deep.

Haaland hit the post and had further chances as City tried to give themselves a margin of safety, but Pep Guardiola’s side had to settle for a surprisingly narrow victory.

After capturing Arsenal, they now lead the table in terms of goals scored, with both sides on 70 points from 33 games and with an identical goal difference of plus 37.

For Scott Parker’s Burnley, the inevitable has now become a reality as they are stuck on 20 points, 13 points behind the safety zone, with just four games remaining.

City fans sang ‘we are top of the league’ at the final whistle as their team reached the top, but it was with a mixture of relief as things could never really relax.

Arsenal have led the race since early October but came to a standstill in April and Haaland’s 2-1 winner at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday put City ahead.

However, with the race being so close, it would have been expected that Burnley would have been edged out by a bigger margin on Wednesday and given themselves an edge on goal difference.

It certainly looked that way early on as Burnley keeper Martin Dubravka made a great save from Rayan Cherki before Haaland was played through and the Norwegian advanced before drilling a subtle left-footed finish past the goalkeeper.

City had ten attempts on goal before half-time, although Burnley posed a threat, with Jaidon Anthony having an early shot saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma, while Zian Flemming fired wide.

Antoine Semenyo fired a chance over the crossbar early in the second half and Haaland hit the post as City pushed for a second goal.

Ultimately it was a nervy finale as Burnley won a corner deep into stoppage time with Dubravka sent forward, but City avoided any stumble to take the points.
