Former international goalkeeper of Nigeria Peter Rufai died at the age of 61 after an illness, the National Football Federation said Thursday.
Popularly known as Dodomayana, Rufai earned 65 caps for Nigeria and to be seen on the FIFA World Cup Finals 1994 and 1998.
He was also part of the Super Eagles team when Nigeria won a second Africa Cup of Nations Trophy in Tunisia in 1994 and defeated Zambia 2-1 in the final.
«We mourn the death of the legendary goalkeeper of Super Eagles, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a AFCon champion from 1994,» said Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in Post on Social Platform X.
«Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond.»

In a statement, the NFF said Rufai «died in Lagos after a period of illness».
NFF -Secretary -General Mohammed Sanusi, said that Rufai’s death was «really shocking».
Rufai played for various Nigerian clubs before moving abroad in Benin, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain.
