Brazilian Estevao will miss the rest of the season due to doubts about participation in the World Cup

Brazil forward Estevao’s World Cup hopes are in doubt after it was confirmed on Friday that he will miss the rest of the season due to a hamstring injury.

It is not clear whether the Chelsea player will recover in time for the tournament, which runs until June and July.

Chelsea interim coach Calum McFarlane did not give a timetable for Estevao’s recovery after he suffered the injury in the first half of last week’s match against Manchester United.

“Estevao will unfortunately not play for us this season as he will be out for a while, which is a real shame, especially for someone so young and so talented,” said McFarlane.

«I’m sure he is hopeful of reaching the World Cup, but I don’t know anything about that.»

The 19-year-old was taken off the pitch 16 minutes into the 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge and missed Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat to Brighton.

Estevao joined Chelsea from Palmeiras last year and has scored eight goals this season. He was expected to be part of Carlo Ancelotti’s squad for the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, having scored five times in his last six internationals.
