Lionel Messi and Inter Miami are still waiting for their first victory in their new home.
Germán Berterame scored off a rebound in the 76th minute and Inter Miami finished in a 1-1 draw with the New England Revolution on Saturday night, leaving the defending MLS Cup champions winless in three games at their new stadium in Miami.
The Herons are 0-0-3 in the new building – compared to 5-1-1 in MLS road games this season. Inter Miami is now undefeated (5-0-4) in their last nine MLS games after a season-opening loss at LAFC, and undefeated in their last 11 games (5-0-6) in all competitions.
Former MLS MVP Carles Gil scored in the 56th minute for New England, which had lost each of its last four meetings with Inter Miami.
Gil’s goal started when Will Sands’ long throw-in was handled in the penalty area by Dor Turgeman, who basically just left the ball where the attacking Gil could get it. Gil fired the ball past Inter Miami goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair to open the scoring.
That goal came just minutes after Inter Miami thought it had struck first, but Tadeo Allende’s right foot was waved away for offside.
About twenty minutes later, Inter Miami decided the match. Luis Suárez turned and attempted a shot from close to the goalmouth, with the low roller saved by New England goalkeeper Matt Turner. The ball hit Turner’s hand and went straight to Berterame, who scored with ease to make it 1-1.
Until then, it looked like the Revolution would earn their first series win since June 10, 2023 – just days after Messi stunned many in the soccer world by saying he would be coming to MLS and joining Inter Miami. Messi did not play for Inter Miami for another few weeks.
Inter Miami has defeated New England 16-5 in the four games since that 2023 contest, winning all four handily.
Messi had a few good chances, including in the 38th minute when – with two defenders behind him – he ran into a ball that had been shot into the penalty area.
Messi appeared to stumble ever so slightly as he pushed the ball to his left foot. He sent a weak shot wide, looked at the sky and smiled in disbelief after the action.
He tried to hit a corner into the net midway through the first half and had another decent chance from about twelve yards during first half stoppage time. Both shots were easily stopped by Turner and the teams went into halftime tied 0-0.
Inter Miami has five games remaining before MLS’s seven-week break for the FIFA World Cup begins. None of these five threatening opponents – Orlando, Toronto, Cincinnati, Portland and Philadelphia – currently have a winning record.
Toronto (3-3-4) is at .500, while none of the other four clubs opened Saturday better than 12th in their conference standings.
