24 hours to departure: San Diego to Lordsburg

Weasel and I had a great time in San Diego and learned a lot of useful information for work. We will have changes to our work protocols in the near future.

We had a fun 1/2 mile walk with our loaded packages to the Santa Fe Depot. It was a beautiful Art Deco masterpiece.

We had an epic Scrabble battle while waiting for the train to Los Angeles. It was also interesting to see the Amish families take the train. I had high expectations for this trip. I read an article recently that said this was one of the most scenic routes in the United States. The article is definitely not exaggerating.

I saw another exceptional Art Deco building. We were pleasantly surprised that our bed ticket allowed us access to a private lounge with comfortable chairs, a private bathroom, drinks, and snacks during our wait. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom were playing in the living room. The dinner scene is still as good as I remembered.

Getting into the sleeper car at midnight CST, hence the crazy eyes.

LA Union Station to Lordsburg, NM on the Texas Eagle

It was the first time we slept on a night train. The room was small but quiet and had blackout curtains. I had no problem sleeping in the bunk with the train rocking gently. It was like sleeping in a bassinet. The train horn was surprisingly relaxing at night. I would definitely take another overnight trip in the future. Breakfast in the dining car was really delicious and the views of the Sonoran Desert were incredible.

It was surreal getting off the train. The conductor cheered for us when he saw our loaded backpacks. There were 5 or 6 other backpackers also leaving the train. We met Ravioli, Hulk and Charm on the way to the hotel. We checked in early and retrieved our resupply boxes. We spent the afternoon packing all of our conference clothes and mailing them home. To celebrate, we had the first of many green chile burritos.
