Germany postpones announcement of 2026 World Cup squad by nine days to give injured players more time

Germany has postponed the announcement of its 2026 World Cup squad by nine days to take into account the final day of the Bundesliga and give injured players more time to show their fitness.

German national coach Julian Nagelsmann was scheduled to announce his selection on May 12 in Frankfurt, but was postponed on Tuesday to May 21.

The collection of the selection has also been postponed by two days to May 27.

The final round of the Bundesliga is on May 16, while the German Cup final between Bayern Munich and Stuttgart – where many German call-ups are likely to be made – is on May 23.

The World Cup preparations were supposed to start on May 25 in the Bavarian seaside resort of Herzogenaurach, but Nagelsmann probably wants to give his players from Bayern and Stuttgart a little longer rest beforehand.

If Bayern reaches the Champions League final on May 30, any German players from the team will only then join their international counterparts.

Germany will play a World Cup warm-up against Finland on May 31 in Mainz and against the United States on June 6 in Chicago.

Four-time champion Germany will face Ivory Coast, Ecuador and newcomer Curaçao in group E at the World Cup.

Bayern striker Serge Gnabry has been ruled out of the tournament, while young Bayern teammate Lennart Karl faces a race to get fit.
