Bundesliga 2025-26: Gladbach beats Dortmund, St Pauli moves closer to relegation

Haris Tabakovic scored with two minutes remaining to give Borussia Mönchengladbach a 1-0 home win over Borussia Dortmund on Sunday, as Mainz pushed St Pauli closer to relegation.

Dortmund, who secured Champions League qualification last week, were harmless in attack against Gladbach, who needed a win to guarantee top-flight football next season.

In the final moments, Tabakovic broke through and finished past Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel to make Gladbach mathematically safe from the fall this season.

Despite a third defeat in four games, Dortmund are assured of Champions League football next season and need two points to take second place behind champions Bayern Munich for the fifth time in the past eight seasons.

Nico Elvedi had a goal disallowed for the host for offside halfway through the first half.

Tabakovic, Gladbach’s most dangerous attacker, then forced Kobel into a save from close range and shot wide of the target early in the second period.

With two minutes to go, Tabakovic put the hosts ahead. His goal, which was ruled offside by the linesman, was allowed by VAR and gave Gladbach their first win over Dortmund since November 2022.

Earlier on Sunday, goals from Phillip Tietz and Phillipp Mwene lifted Mainz to a 2-1 win at St Pauli, moving the hosts closer to the relegation mire.

St Pauli lost despite a late consolation through Abdoulie Ceesay and are in the relegation play-off spot, six points from safety with two games remaining.

Pauli has been winless since February and is only one point ahead of the penultimate Wolfsburg, who are in the automatic relegation place. Wolfsburg can skip St. Pauli by avoiding defeat at Freiburg later on Sunday.

“We don’t have time to dwell on these results,” said St. Pauli captain Jackson Irvine DAZN. “We have two matchdays to fight for our lives and we have to try to put in maximum performance and see what happens.”

St Pauli has spent much of its existence in the second and third tiers, but was promoted to the top Bundesliga in 2024.

Mainz’s victory means that Urs Fischer’s team cannot be relegated.
