Manchester City were crowned Women’s Super League champions for the first time in a decade on Wednesday after last remaining challengers Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton & Hove Albion.
City tops the standings with 52 points and has won 21 of the 22 games played. Arsenal needed to win all their remaining four games to have a chance of top spot, but Brighton kept it deadlocked by sending the title to the North West instead of North London.
Having reached the semi-finals of the Champions League before being knocked out by OL Lyonnes last weekend, Arsenal started Wednesday’s match against Brighton with a significant task on their hands if they wanted to threaten City, but they went behind when Fuka Tsunoda scored just before half-time.
Norwegian midfielder Frida Maanum scored a goal on the hour mark, but despite a late attack, Arsenal were unable to find a winner.
