American midfielder Johnny Cardoso has sprained his right ankle five weeks before the World Cup, his club Atletico Madrid announced on Thursday.
Atletico said Cardoso was injured during training and will recuperate. The club gave no timetable for his return.
La Liga still has four rounds to go and Atletico is aiming for a place in the top four.
The US opens its World Cup campaign on June 13 against Paraguay in Inglewood, California. It will therefore play against Australia and Turkey in Group D.
The 24-year-old Cardoso has played 23 games for the US since his debut in 2020.
Atletico was eliminated by Arsenal in the semi-finals of the Champions League this week.
