FIFA World Cup 2026: Davies injury clouds Canada’s hopes as defender faces weeks on the sidelines

Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies will be sidelined for «several weeks» after suffering a left hamstring injury during the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain, in a potential blow to Canada’s World Cup preparations.

Davies, who came on as a second-half substitute against PSG on Wednesday, has been struggling with muscle injuries this season and Bayern’s medical team confirmed on Friday that the wing-back’s club season was virtually over.

Davies has made just six appearances in the Bundesliga this season, having not played 90 minutes in a match since February.

With Bayern eliminated in the semi-finals of the Champions League, the German champions have just three games left this season, including a cup final against Stuttgart on May 23.

But the timing could hardly be worse for Canada, which will co-host the World Cup from June 11. The 25-year-old serves as captain for his country, who start their group campaign against Bosnia on June 12.

Davies’ injury problems have continued to worsen this season, with the defender already missing friendlies against Iceland and Tunisia in March due to a hamstring injury.
