Community Center Burritos – The Trek

Wow, what a difference a little sunshine makes. We had about 20 people at camp last night and we all woke up feeling well rested after getting through yesterday’s struggle.

We went to the community center for a quiet morning of coffee, burritos, resupplies, and even hot showers. We planned an easy 10 mile day knowing we wouldn’t start the trail as early as usual. This also made more sense for us water-wise, with a creek about 2 miles away and more water 7 miles later at Mike’s Place the next day.

I spent most of the day walking and talking to Straight Up. The chatting definitely made the miles fly by. Pretty soon we found Cool Beans resting at our house for the night. After that, the Penguin waddled up the hill! Unfortunately it came with bad news. Floki was having some muscle problems and only made it three miles. He is planning to return to Warner Springs to be taken to the Little Bear Hostel, about 25 miles down the road. We hope that a couple of days off will help you and that you will feel refreshed when we get there and we can all enjoy a zero in Idyllwild together.

Speaking of Idyllwild, we are absolutely stoked about this zero. We are scheduling the week to arrive in the city on Friday. There’s been talk of weekend karaoke at the bar for days, so word is spreading that Friday night is karaoke night. Even better, I booked an Airbnb for the 4 or 5 of us with laundry, hot tub, and a short walk into town. Of course, being close to karaoke was a priority. We also found out there is a trail festival in town on Saturday! There should be some interesting treats for hikers and rumor has it that Mayor Max, the town’s 4-legged canine mayor, will be making an appearance. Even though there are a few days left, having this to look forward to is a huge positive to get through the week.

To end the evening we all sat down as a group to enjoy the sunset. Our camp is next to a cliff with wide views of the hills we just climbed. It was one of those «wow, we’re really doing this» moments. Magic.

Now let’s see how many more people I can fit into Friday night karaoke all week.
