Striker Mohamed Salah could return this week after suffering an injury in Liverpool’s Premier League match against Aston Villa, manager Arne Slot said on Thursday.
Salah has not played since being forced off due to a hamstring injury during a 3-1 win over Crystal Palace last month. This led to fears that his season and possibly his Anfield career could be over with the Egyptian set to leave at the end of the season.
However, Liverpool later confirmed that the injury was not as serious as initially feared.
«Mo (Salah) will be available tomorrow, but only for a few minutes. Hopefully he can come in,» Slot told reporters ahead of Friday’s visit to Villa.
«Alisson has trained with us again, let’s see tomorrow if he is ready or has to wait another week. Florian (Wirtz) has had a stomach infection and is receiving antibiotics. Let’s see if he is ready to play tomorrow.»
Liverpool, fourth in the standings and level with Villa on 59 points, can secure a place in next season’s Champions League if they win at Villa Park, but there is little else for fans of the Merseyside club to look forward to in the final weeks of the season.
Slot’s side are unable to build on last season’s success in the Premier League and will have to make do without silverware, leading to questions over the Dutch manager’s future at the club.
Asked whether he will still play at Anfield next season, Slot said: «I don’t think I will decide that myself. I have every reason to believe that I will be Liverpool’s manager next season. Firstly, I have a contract with this club, and secondly, because of all the conversations we are having. If you don’t have the best season, especially if you compare it to last season, this has certainly not been a great season. Then it is normal. That criticism comes, and we have all had our share. «That’s how things work these days, if you take the competition does not win.’
Liverpool host Brentford in their final league match of the season on May 24.
