Neuer signs a one-year extension from Bayern for the 16th season in Munich

Bayern Munich veteran Manuel Neuer announced on Friday that he has extended his contract with the German champions for a year, until 2027.

The 40-year-old goalkeeper’s contract was due to expire this summer, but he will remain in Munich for his 16th year with the Bavarian club.

“It was a clear decision after I took some time to think,” Neuer said.

“All conditions have been met here: with this team we can beat any opponent.”

Considered one of the best goalkeepers in history, Neuer finished third in the 2014 Ballon d’Or election, behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. It remains the most recent time a goalkeeper made the top three.

German tabloid Image reported that Neuer will play fewer games in the 2026/27 season as he helps facilitate a smooth transition to backup goalkeeper Jonas Urbig.

Bayern have also extended the contract of third-choice goalkeeper Sven Ulreich for another season.

Neuer, who won the 2014 World Cup with Germany, remained at Bayern after ending his international career in 2024. He won 124 caps for the four-time world champion.

The veteran was widely praised for his performance in the first leg of Bayern’s Champions League quarter-final away win against Real Madrid, where he was named UEFA player of the match.

Neuer has had a glittering career at Bayern since joining from youth club Schalke in 2011.

In addition to two Champions League titles, he has won the Bundesliga thirteen times, the highest record next to former teammate Thomas Mueller.
