Striker Lamine Yamal is not expected to play in Spain’s World Cup opener against Cape Verde in Atlanta on June 15 due to a hamstring injury. The Athletics reported on Monday.
Yamal’s FC Barcelona teammate Fermin Lopez was less fortunate after being effectively ruled out of Spain’s World Cup run due to a right foot fracture requiring surgery. The midfielder was injured during the first half of Sunday’s victory against Real Betis.
Yamal tore his left hamstring in an April 22 match for Barcelona and was ruled out for the remainder of the season from his club team. The injury occurred when he scored from a penalty against Celta Vigo.
Yamal, 18, was expected to be available for World Cup matches, although he is also doubtful whether he will feature in Spain’s second Group H match against Saudi Arabia on June 21 in Atlanta.
Spain’s third and final match in Group H will take place on June 26 against Uruguay in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Spain, currently number 2 in the latest FIFA men’s world rankings, will announce its 26-player World Cup squad next Monday.
Spain won UEFA Euro 2024 in part thanks to the contributions of then 16-year-old Yamal. A sublime playmaker and finisher, Yamal has scored six goals in 25 appearances for the Spanish national team.
In 28 La Liga appearances for Barcelona, Yamal scored 16 goals, including 24 goals in 45 appearances in all competitions.
