Southampton kicked out of Championship play-off final over spying allegations

Southampton have been banned from the Championship play-off final after being found guilty of espionage.

The Saints were charged by English football authorities with spying on Middlesbrough’s training sessions ahead of the teams’ matches in the Championship play-offs.

Following the independent investigation, Southampton admitted to spying on Middlesbrough, Oxford United and Ipswich Town this season, leading to their ouster.

Southampton were also given a four-point deduction in the Championship for next season.

Middlesbrough, who were beaten by Southampton in the play-off semi-finals, will now play the play-off final against Hull City at Wembley on Saturday for a place in the Premier League.

“Southampton has the right to appeal the Commission’s decision in accordance with EFL regulations and the parties are working to resolve any appeal by Wednesday, May 20. Depending on the outcome, this could result in a further change to Saturday’s match,” the EFL said in a statement.

“The EFL is now in discussions with all three clubs about the implications of today’s decision and will make a further announcement in due course.”
