Manuel Neuer will miss Saturday’s German Cup final against Bayern Munich’s Stuttgart due to a calf injury, the latest injury setback for the veteran goalkeeper.
On Friday, Bayern announced that Neuer was not part of the 21-man squad that made the trip to the German capital for the showpiece as he had not recovered from injury.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper made a surprise return to Germany’s World Cup squad on Thursday, returning two years after announcing his international retirement to play in a fifth World Cup.
Neuer was named man of the match in Bayern’s 2-1 win at Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals in April and has continued to play at a high level this season, but missed several games due to injury.
The 2014 World Cup winner is suffering from the recurrence of a calf injury in the same leg he broke in a skiing accident in 2022.
Neuer was sent off after sixty minutes in Bayern’s last Bundesliga match on Saturday with a problem in the same calf muscle.
Neuer will be replaced by substitute Jonas Urbig, who will also guide the German team as a practice goalkeeper this summer.
Bayern, winners of the Bundesliga in mid-April, can win a record-extending 14th double by beating Stuttgart in the German capital on Saturday.
