Changes – Fox AT Thru Hike – Day 61

Today was just a short hop to the Mountain Home lodge. Scott showed me around and the property is really great. It’s surprising how pretty some of the old houses can be.

Since there wasn’t much trace today, now is a good time to talk about changes. Specifically, you may have already noticed the changes in my diet. Right now I can’t receive good food from home in the mail. I also received a defective fuel can and couldn’t get a new one at my last fill-up. This prompted me to stop cooking. I am NOT cold soaking. I’m only buying foods that don’t need cooking. Fortunately, I love cheese and hard cheese keeps, even when it’s hot.

Probably a view – another day

My biggest concern is calories. Calories are king, empty or not. Before, I would usually cook two large meals and get over 1000 calories each. Protein is a distant, very distant second. The math is simple: I only need about 60g of protein a day. But to get more than 3000 calories at 100 c/oz…

So, yes, some “junk” food will be added. But, just like the pint of ice cream I buy at every store, it helps with need number one. I also rely more on things that fit in my pockets: bars, etc. I plan to eat a lot while traveling.

I planned and tried my original meal. Now I’m improvising and, frankly, I’m pretty nervous about it.

  • Breakfast: Cheese and crackers.
  • Lunch: leftover Indian food, yogurt.
  • Dinner: roast chicken, bag salad, pint of ice cream
  • Snacks: twix, cereal bars, cookies, fig bars, cheese, crackers.
  • Known today: gypsy
  • Days without a ramen bomb: 61
  • Today I am grateful for: Mountain Home
