Girona were relegated from La Liga along with Mallorca on Saturday after a nerve-wracking 1-1 home draw with Elche relegated them to the second division, two years after third place secured Champions League football.
Needing a win to stay alive, Girona fell behind in the first half and although they leveled after the break, no winner could be found in a tense Montilivi.
The result left them in the bottom three at the final whistle, sending Real Oviedo down to the cellar.
Mallorca defeated visitors Oviedo 3-0, but finished 42 points behind Osasuna and Levante and were relegated after losing the head-to-head tiebreak between the three clubs.
Celta Vigo secured sixth place and a spot in the Europa League with a 1–0 win over Sevilla, while Getafe defeated Osasuna 1–0 to finish seventh and claim qualification for the Conference League.
Five teams from 15th to 19th entered the final day still nervously looking over their shoulders, with Oviedo already doomed at the foot of the table.
Mallorca started 19th with 39 points, Girona 18th with 40, while Elche, Osasuna and Levante were above them with 42.
That ensured all eyes were on the biggest drama of the afternoon in Girona, between two teams fighting for survival, and Elche struck first with a moment of brilliance from Alvaro Rodriguez in the 39th minute.
With his back to two defenders in the penalty area, Rodriguez controlled the ball, turned superbly and struck the top corner with a hard effort, leaving Girona staring into the abyss.
Girona responded in the 48th minute when Arnau Martinez fired in a rebound after a free kick, briefly restoring faith among the home fans. But the late push for a winner only brought frustration and ultimately silence.
Champions Barcelona, who took the title ahead of second-place Real Madrid two weeks ago, ended their season with a 3-1 defeat to Valencia. Real defeated Athletic Bilbao 4-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu in Dani Carvajal’s farewell appearance.
Kylian Mbappé scored in the 51st minute to register his 25th LaLiga goal of the season and finish as the competition’s top scorer, two goals ahead of Mallorca’s Vedat Muriqi.
Atletico Madrid and Villarreal close the season on Sunday with a final LaLiga match that will decide who finishes third and fourth as they are level on 69 points.
They are nine points ahead of Real Betis, who complete the top five in qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
Real Sociedad, in tenth place, secured a place in the Europa League by winning the Copa del Rey.
