Day 21: Go to hiker jail

Rumors that the AT doesn’t have good views don’t seem to be true. At least not yet. Sometimes you just have to follow a little blue flare.

The highlight of the day was Mount Cammerer, with a viewing point at the top. It was a 0.6 mile detour through the blue fire. But it was worth it! Very cool views from here.

being imprisoned

We arrived at the Davenport Gap shelter, which is special. This one has a fence that you can close from the inside. It’s to keep the bears away, but it feels more like a prison or a reverse zoo for the bears. However, it feels secure and looks great.

One hiker told me that these fences were at all of the Smoky’s lodges, but they were taken down because people kept feeding the bears through the fences. We just can’t have nice things, can we?

I stayed awake for a while, talked to the others, also about the things you should do as a foreigner when you are here. Apparently a gas station called Bucky’s is a must-see. You should also have something called a ‘floater’: soda mixed with ice cream. I’m not sure how much we can really do since we don’t have a car. But we’ll find out!
