Mohamed Salah may not have achieved the goal he wanted to end his nine-year spell at Liverpool, but the Egyptian did provide an assist before an emotional departure as his side secured a 1-1 Premier League draw at home to Brentford and secured a fifth-place finish that secured Champions League football next season.
Salah was part of the starting XI, despite recent criticism of coach Arne Slot’s playing style, and looked lively throughout. He hit a free-kick against a post in the first half before setting up Curtis Jones with the outside of his left foot to put the home side ahead in the 58th minute.
In doing so, he recorded his 93rd assist for Liverpool, breaking Steven Gerrard’s record of 92.
Salah’s substitution 16 minutes later caused a groundswell of emotion on Merseyside. His eyes filled with tears as he hugged his teammates. The crowd loudly chanted his name as he walked to the sideline for the last time, stopping to fall to his knees for a brief prayer.
«I think I’ve cried more than I have in my entire life. I’m not really an emotional guy. We lived our youth here and shared everything, from the beginning to the end. We brought this club back where it belongs,» Salah said. Air sports.
There was more emotion in the 83rd minute when left back Andy Robertson, signed in the same transfer window as Salah, also parted ways with Liverpool, and the crowd gave the Scottish defender a loud ovation when he was replaced by Milos Kerkez.
When the match was over and Champions League football secured, Liverpool’s players and staff formed a guard of honor for the departing players, and more tears followed as their titles and achievements were read out in red over the PA system.
Salah remained on the pitch long after the final whistle, wringing all the emotion out of his final performance before addressing his departure.
«It’s life. I look back and wonder if I would have wanted more than I achieved, (and) not really – we won everything, we see the love from the fans, and ‘this is the most important thing for me,'» he said.
«I will be far away from here. I will be emotional every time (I visit), I hope the team stays in this position and fights for everything.»
