Indian Super League club Mohun Bagan Super Giant has urged AIFF to reduce the number of foreign players allowed in the upcoming Durand Cup.
The statement from MBSG read: “Mohun Bagan Super Giant has already sent a letter giving their consent to play in the Durand Cup, which starts on July 15. Once again, a letter has been sent on behalf of our club urging them to reduce the number of foreign players in the competition so that Indian footballers can get more playing opportunities.
«Last season too, a request was made to include only Indian footballers in the Durand Cup, keeping in mind the wider development of Indian football. True to that vision, the Green Maroons have renewed their commitment to this philosophy this year too.»
Currently, ISL and I-League clubs can register six foreigners, of which only four are allowed on the field at a time. On the other hand, the Super Cup and Durand Cup allow six foreign players per team.
FPAI seeks clarity
Meanwhile, the Football Players Association of India issued a statement on Monday seeking clarity on the 2026-2027 Indian domestic season.
“The uncertainty surrounding next year’s competition has left a significant number of professional players in the country, many of whom represent the national team, unemployed. Relevant stakeholders must resolve their differences and chart a clear path forward for the development of the sport in the province.
«Players, coaches and backroom staff deserve clarity and a secure environment to perform at their highest level. We urge all our members/players to contact us if they require any form of assistance during these uncertain times,» the statement said.
