West Ham United co-chairman David Sullivan resigned with immediate effect on Saturday after becoming aware of what he called «factually incorrect and completely false, decades-old allegations» that were about to be published.
The 77-year-old businessman also stepped down as director of WH Holding Limited and West Ham, which was relegated from the Premier League on the final day of the season.
In a lengthy personal statement, Sullivan said he had become aware that the «factually incorrect and «completely false, decades-old allegations» about his personal life were about to be broadcast and published.
“The false allegations against me have been sensationalized by the media,” Sullivan said. “After a lifetime of building businesses in the adult industry, during which I have met thousands of women, it is unfortunately inevitable that a small number of charges of inappropriate behavior will be brought against me.
“I categorically deny these claims.”
Sullivan also stated that he would sue the BBC for defamation, along with every other media outlet that “repeats all defamatory allegations.”
Reuters has contacted the BBC for comment.
MOVEMENTS NOT RELATED TO WEST HAM
The club said none of the allegations relate to West Ham or any of its activities.
“Interim Chief Executive Officer Karim Virani, reporting to the current Board of Directors, will remain responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of the club,” West Ham said.
“The club will provide an update on the future structure of the Board of Directors in due course.”
Sullivan described his decision to resign as “incredibly painful,” but one that was necessary.
«None of these allegations relate to my thirty-plus years of football; West Ham United has been one of the greatest passions and privileges of my life,» Sullivan added.
“I care a lot about the club, its supporters, its players, its staff and its future.
“At what is already a challenging and important time for the club, I refuse to allow personal matters affecting me to become an unnecessary distraction or source of instability.”
After relegation, West Ham will play in the second championship for the first time since the 2011-2012 season.
“I am resigning to devote my full energy and attention to combating these false allegations,” Sullivan said.
“I have officially engaged my legal team and we are preparing to take legal action regarding any false complaint filed against me.
“I will seek full redress on every front, legally and publicly.”
