Day 34: Tortuous Detour – The Walk

Today we had a small detour. Good at first, but oh my god! This was one of the hardest sections so far!

My dad and I had a slight advantage over the rest. It’s good to have some conversations with him again.

After a while we ran into some weekend hikers at a tent site. When we passed by, we noticed that they were burning all the garbage. The whole place stank of burnt plastic. Not very good.

My dad especially wasn’t amused and wanted to say something about it. But his English is not very sophisticated. And situations like this require some tact to avoid misunderstandings. So even if our feeling of righteousness does not agree, it is better to leave it that way.

Ferds and Scholar joined us on our short break and we walked the rest together.

Detour

The next step was the detour. It started out as a walk down a very nice gravel road. It’s not really a classic AT experience, but it’s nice to have a relatively flat and easy road hike.

At our lunch spot, there were a bunch of butterflies sitting in one place. Dad’s dream come true!

The pleasant hike was now over…the detour sent us straight up a mountain covered in steps. This is steep!

The descent was just as bad! And the worst thing: he took us down the same path! Just one more corner.

We arrived at the shelter tired. Everyone has complained about the detour. Oh well, we still did it!
