Nine people were injured in a shooting near England’s FIFA World Cup base camp in Kansas City, Missouri, according to a report by The Athletics.
Police responded to reports of gunfire on Troostlaan around 4 a.m. on Saturday. The venue is less than five miles from the training base that England will use during the tournament and a short drive from the team’s designated hotel.
Captain Jake Becchina of the Kansas City Police Department said The Athletics that officers arrived and found a large crowd dispersing from the area. Three adult women were initially injured and taken to hospital.
The incident comes days after the Kansas City Board of Police Commissioners accepted a $17 million federal grant aimed at improving security measures during the World Cup. KCPD Deputy Chief Derek McCollum said the department had moved forward with plans despite uncertainty about funding.
The England team is currently in Florida to complete their preparations for the World Cup. The team defeated New Zealand 1-0 in a warm-up match on Saturday and will play Costa Rica on Wednesday before traveling to Kansas City on June 13.
The Three Lions train during the tournament at Swope Soccer Village. Fellow World Cup contenders Argentina and the Netherlands are also based in Kansas City.
The city expects to welcome around 650,000 visitors during the World Cup, which will pose significant logistical and security challenges for local authorities.
