It was a quick 8 miles from our campsite to the James River Pedestrian Bridge. Another hiker had arranged a shuttle into town to resupply and offered to let me tag along.
James River Walkway
Before heading into town, I stopped to read the plaque on the bridge. It is reportedly the longest pedestrian bridge on the AT and is dedicated to William T. Foot, a hiker and conservationist. He was a hiker and member of ATC, and he and his wife were the first to complete the American Discovery Trail. I was happy to hear from him and am always amazed by people who dedicate so much of their lives to trail work.
hanging out
One of the local hostels took us to Glasgow and I immediately set about running my errands. I shopped at two different stores and had a delicious gluten free pizza at Scotto’s. It continues to amaze me that some of these small town local restaurants are so accommodating to dietary restrictions. It is wonderful to see and experience.
Then I stayed at the hostel, charging my devices while waiting for the other hikers in my transportation to finish. Some of us sat on the porch and talked about books. I received new recommendations for some to listen to while walking. I felt like I basically spent the entire afternoon relaxing.
Late starts
We didn’t get back on the trail until after 4 pm and started heading straight up Bluff Mountain. I think I got a second wind because I was surprised at how quickly I did it, and so late in the afternoon. There was a small and somewhat secret campsite right next to the trail at the top.
It was a great tent site, although I had a lot of anxiety about the dead trees and branches above me. I think widows are my biggest «fear on the road.» Another hiker helped me find a spot we thought was good and I went to sleep.
