The day started with a little side trail to the old Overmountain Shelter, but it’s no longer there. But the view of the valley is one of the best. It is well worth the detour.
There’s also a stunning loo, which was… interesting.

Next stop: Hump Mountain. We again had incredible views! We had lunch on top of the rocks and it was incredible.

But we couldn’t enjoy much more because it started to rain again. Making the trail a big slippery mess.

Goodbye North Carolina!
After crossing the North Carolina-Tennessee border countless times over the past few weeks, we are now leaving North Carolina for the last time!

Hitchhiking for the first time
The goal for the day was to hike 11 miles and resupply in the town of Roan Mtn. The guide said the local barbecue place shuttles hikers to the restaurant, but apparently they don’t do that anymore.
I guess there’s no other option but to try hitchhiking! So, we stuck out our thumb and hoped for the best. It took a little while but after a while a lovely lady stopped to take us into town! Awesome!
We went to the barbecue! It’s a little different than what I thought barbecue would be like, but I always like to experience new things! And this was great! After this we went shopping.

We are planning to stay at the Mountain Harbor lodge, but the lodge portion is under reconstruction. Thus, hikers can camp there for free. According to our guide, they’ve been voted the best breakfast on the AT for 13 years running! We’re not going to miss that!
When we went to get our bags, a driver from the local shuttle service offered to take us there! We tried to pay her to bring us, but she insisted that she doesn’t charge anything within the town. That’s so sweet! They are definitely helping us a lot with getting around the city!
They’re building something nice here.
When we arrived at Mountain Harbor, we immediately fell in love with the place. It is built on a small, cool stream. They have a small lounge, live music and they are rebuilding the hostel. It’s huge! This place will be amazing when it’s finished!
We planned our next few days and stayed, having a great time!
