Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen has reassured supporters that he is doing well after collapsing during an international friendly against Sweden on Sunday.
«I want to let everyone know that I am doing well and that I am home with my family. As you can probably imagine, receiving a shock from my ICD has had a major impact on both me and my family, but I want to reassure everyone that this was a different situation than what happened in 2021,» he posted in a statement on Instagram.
The 34-year-old former Manchester United midfielder, who had a kind of pacemaker inserted after he succumbed to cardiac arrest in 2021, fell to the ground in the 64th minute of the match in Odense.
Medical personnel rushed onto the field as players from both teams gathered around to shield the scene from television or smartphone cameras.
The referee called off the match and Eriksen was subsequently taken to hospital after being shielded by both players as he left the field.
Danish team doctor Morten Boesen said Eriksen had been “briefly unconscious” but “the pacemaker responded as it should”.
Eriksen added: «I feel good and my recovery has already started. Besides being grateful for the support and help of all the players and the medical team on the field, I am also incredibly grateful to the doctors who have cared for me and my heart over the years. Thanks to their expertise, my ICD did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I needed it.»
“For now my focus is on recovering, spending time with my family, going on holiday and playing football with my children.”
