Giroud signs a one-year contract extension with Lille

French record scorer Olivier Giroud has extended his contract with Ligue 1 team Lille for one season, the club announced on Monday.

The 39-year-old former Arsenal, Chelsea and AC Milan striker scored 57 goals in 137 appearances for France during a 13-year international career.

«I identify with the vision of Lille, a club with values that I share, a club that works hard and stands out from the rest through its approach and results,» 2018 World Cup winner Giroud said in a statement.

“I always want more and I am determined to keep going and do even better this year,” he added.

Giroud joined Lille last season and scored 11 goals, including four in the Europa League. Lille finished the season third and qualified for the Champions League.

His leadership was regularly praised by coach Bruno Genesio, who was replaced by Italian Davide Ancelotti, son of Brazilian coach Carlo Ancelotti.

«I don’t know Davide Ancelotti personally, but the fact that he is a young coach is great. He is a coach with fresh ideas. I am convinced he has a lot to offer the club and I look forward to working with him,» said Giroud.

Giroud’s goalscoring record with France could soon be overtaken by Kylian Mbappe, who has scored 56 goals.
