New York has honored two football greats by temporarily renaming its streets after Thierry Henry and Pele ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
The tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, starts Thursday, with the final scheduled for next month at MetLife Stadium, temporarily renamed New York New Jersey Stadium.
According to FOX Sports, crowds gathered at the corner of West 50th Street and Sixth Avenue in Manhattan as city officials unveiled “Thierry Henry Way.”
The former Arsenal and Barcelona forward, a member of France’s 1998 World Cup-winning squad, took part in the ceremony via video call.
Henry, 48, further cemented his popularity in the United States during a five-year stint with the New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer that ended in 2014.
The city also renamed the intersection of Shea Road and Meridian Road in Queens in honor of Brazilian legend Pele.
The commemorative street names will remain in effect until November 1.
