Why isn’t Xherdan Shaqiri playing in Qatar vs Switzerland in FIFA World Cup 2026?

Switzerland opens its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Qatar on Saturday, June 13, at the San Francisco Bay Arena Stadium in San Francisco.

However, it will do so without its iconic winger Xherdan Shaqiri, who has often been its star player in international competitions.

Shaqiri will not be at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as he retired from international football in 2024 after the European Championship, having played 135 games and scored 32 goals.

He remains active in club football, playing for Basel in his home country.
