Australian forward Nestory Irankunda opened the scoring for his side in the 2026 FIFA World Cup during their Group D match against Turkiye at Vancouver’s BC Place on Sunday.
He latched onto a long ball from Paul Okon-Engstler before stepping into the opponent’s penalty area and burying the ball in the bottom left corner.
Who is Nestory that I love?
Irankunda currently plays his club football at Watford FC and has scored four goals and five assists in 42 appearances in all competitions.
Ahead of the 2024–25 season, he secured a move to German giants Bayern Munich, but did not make a single appearance for the club and spent half the season on loan at Swiss club Grasshoppers.
The 20-year-old was born to a Burundian mother in a Tanzanian refugee camp before moving to Perth at three months old.
He started his professional career with Adelaide United in the A-League, scoring 16 goals and assisting a further eight in 61 appearances for the team.
