France begins its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Senegal at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Tuesday.
However, The Blues were without Karim Benzema when the line-up was announced for the campaign opener.
The Al Hilal striker scored nine goals and assisted two during the 2025-2026 Saudi Pro League.
However, he was not part of the World Cup squad since retiring from international football in 2022 after the last edition of the quadrennial event. He also did not play a single match in that edition after sustaining a quadriceps injury.
Benzema played 97 games and scored 37 goals for France, but his international career was not as productive as his club career. The forward was also left out of the 2018 squad when the team won the title. It was because he was under an internal investigation for blackmailing a teammate.
He returned to the team for Euro 2020, where he scored four goals, before eventually dropping out of the squad for the following tournaments due to injuries.
