FIFA president Gianni Infantino said on Tuesday that one million fans have attended World Cup matches in the United States, Canada and Mexico so far.
«Wow! 1 million fans in stadiums!» Infantino wrote on Instagram.
“A huge thank you to all our passionate supporters who continue to fill the stadiums – you have brought the most inclusive FIFA World Cup to life.”
The expanded World Cup with 48 teams started last Thursday and 16 of the planned 104 matches have been played.
The lead-up to the tournament was marked by fierce criticism over the price of tickets to matches, as well as visa restrictions affecting fans from certain countries entering the US.
