Austria kicked off its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against debutant Jordan at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium on Tuesday.
Roman Schmid put Austria ahead in the 21st minute with a goal from outside the penalty area that ended up in the top right corner.
After struggling to gain any control in the first half, Jordan equalized just five minutes after the restart. Ali Iyad Olwan scored from the edge of the penalty area with a curling right-footed shot that went in off the post.
However, Austria thought they could regain the lead in the 66th minute after all-time top scorer Marko Arnautovic found the back of the net from close range after coming off the bench. But after a VAR check the goal was disallowed.
Why was Marko Arnautovic’s goal disallowed?
Replays showed that before Arnautovic’s loose ball ended up in the net, it hit the outstretched arm of right back Stefan Posch.
Because the VAR could not make a decision, referee Dahane Beida was asked to take a look at the screen. After several replays, he returned to the field and disallowed the goal, stating that Posch had handled the ball.
