Austria marked its return to the FIFA World Cup after a 28-year absence with a thrilling 3-1 victory over debutants Jordan in a Group J match on Tuesday, relying on a second-half own goal and a last-gasp penalty to claim the three points.
Austria took the lead after 20 minutes through Romano Schmid’s thunderbolt, but were beaten back five minutes after half-time when striker Ali Olwan found space in the area and fired a blistering shot into the far post.

Austrian veteran Marko Arnautovic hit a low shot into the net from a goal in the 69th minute, but it was ruled out by teammate Stefan Posch for handball after a VAR review.
However, Austria celebrated again seven minutes later when Yazan Al-Arab deflected Marcel Sabitzer’s corner into his own net, before Arnautovic fired home a penalty deep into stoppage time after Saleem Obeid was penalized for handball.
