Iraq scored in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup through Aymen Hussein as the 30-year-old equalized against Norway in their group stage match in Boston on Tuesday.
Hussein guided a cross from the left into the net, making it 1-1 and sparking joy among thousands of Iraqi fans in the stadium. It was also the second goal ever for Iraq at the World Cup – a tournament the country is returning to after forty years.
Hussein has been one of Iraq’s most reliable strikers over the years and has found his way into some of the most crucial situations in international football.
He scored twice in the group stage match of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup as Iraq stunned Japan, while hitting the winner against Bolivia in the FIFA World Cup intercontinental play-off to secure a place for the Lions of Mesopotamia in the World Cup for the first time since 1986.
