Spanish city of Malaga withdrew from a guest location for the World Cup 2030 on Saturday, which would be held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
Spain had put forward 11 stadiums to be used, including La Rosaleda in the city of South Coast.
Malaga Mayor Francisco de la Torre said, however, that hosting competitions could cause problems for the club and fans of the city, due to reconstruction work that is needed at the stadium.
«Choosing between the World Cup and the club, we choose the club and the fans,» said De la Torre after a meeting with the Malaga Council and the regional government of Andalusia.
“After (different) meetings … We believe that the most responsible, sensible and sensible thing to do today is to leave Malaga’s world cup (hosting).
«If the World Cup is a risk for the club and a problem for the fans, it is not worthwhile to come along.»
Malaga should play in an alternative stadium of 12,500 capacity while the reconstruction took place at La Rosaleda, and they currently have more than 26,000 seasonal card holders.
The works would have cost an estimated 270 million euros ($ 316 million), but the mayor said the decision had not been taken to reduce costs.
«We want there to be a new stadium. It will not be for the World Cup, but that will be a strong obligation,» added De La Torre.
«We don’t do this to save money, but because it is best for the city, fans and the club.»
The Spanish Second Division Club Malaga participated in the Champions League in 2013, but then dropped as low as the third level in the midst of a financial crisis.
In March, the Head of Spain declined the World Cup 2030 organization Maria Tato after being accused of determining the process to decide which stadiums would organize competitions.
Newspaper El Mundo said that assessments for potential locations were changed to favor Anoeta in San Sebastian, at the expense of Balaidos in Vigo.
The Galician city and the city of Valencia in the east coast are options to replace Malaga as a host.
In June, La Liga Club Valencia completed the financing for the Nou Mestalla Stadium, which is planned to open in 2027 with a capacity of 70,000.
