Neymar will not travel with the Brazil squad for the second World Cup group match against Haiti on Friday as he recovers from a calf injury.
The 34-year-old only returned to training with the national team this week, missing the five-time World Cup winners’ first 1-1 draw against Morocco in Group C.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti said last week that he hoped Neymar would be ready to play a role in the match against Haiti in Philadelphia.
Neymar was diagnosed with an injury to his right calf at the end of May and has only played in half the games for his club Santos this year due to various fitness problems.
According to Brazilian media, Ancelotti and his coaching staff are reluctant to rush the return of Brazil’s all-time top scorer and jeopardize his availability for matches later in the tournament.
Neymar, who has not played for his country since October 2023, «will remain in New Jersey to make the most of the final phase of his recovery process,» the Brazilian Football Federation said in a message to journalists on Thursday.
Brazil’s last group match is on June 24 in Miami against Scotland.
