Jonathan David equals two unique records with hat-trick in Canada vs Qatar at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Jonathan David set two unique records after scoring a hat trick for Canada in the group match against Qatar at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Vancouver on Thursday.

David found the net in the 29th minute with a stunning right-footed volley to double Les Rouges’ lead before doubling his own tally in first-half stoppage time with a tap-in.

With his third goal in second-half stoppage time, he became the first North American man to score a hat-trick at the FIFA World Cup since Bert Patenaude of the United States of America in the tournament’s first edition in 1930.

But that wasn’t the only record he achieved during Canada’s dominant 6-0 win.

He also became the first man to score a hat-trick on home soil in a FIFA World Cup since Geoff Hurst in 1966. Hurst scored one of the most memorable hat-tricks in the tournament’s history in England’s 4–2 victory over West Germany in the final.
