Canada recorded its first FIFA World Cup win on Thursday with a 6-0 victory over Qatar in their Group B match at Canada’s Vancouver Stadium.
Cyle Larin, who had scored the equalizer against Bosnia and Herzegovina, also opened the scoring for Les Rouges, while Jonathan David’s goal kept Canada 3-0 ahead at half-time.
Nathan Saliba came off the bench to score from a stunning free-kick, while Mohammed Al Mannai’s own goal only made matters worse for the Asian champions, who remained outnumbered for almost the entire match after receiving two red cards.
In second half stoppage time, David found the net again to complete his hat-trick and equal Bert Patenaude’s 96-year-old record as a North American to score a hat-trick in the FIFA World Cup.
