Bosnia and Herzegovina were reduced to 10 men against Switzerland when one of the centre-backs was shown a straight red card in their group match in Los Angeles, USA, on Thursday.
Tarik Muharemovic tried to stop Breel Embolo in the final third, just in front of his penalty area, and was immediately sent off for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
Who is Tarik Muharemovic, who received a straight red card against Switzerland at the World Cup?
Tarik Muharemovic is a 23-year-old central defender who plays for Sassuolo in the Italian top flight. Muharemovic was born in Slovenia and graduated from the youth academy of Austrian Wolfsberger AC, before breaking into the club’s first team.
In 2021, he moved to Juventus’ reserve side, where he spent four seasons before moving to Sassulo on loan for the 2024–25 season. He made 28 appearances for the club that season, scoring once, which led to the club making his move permanent last season.
For Bosnia and Herzegovina, he captained the under-21 team under coach Vinko Marinović, and received his first call-up to the senior team in 2024.
