WATCH — Kevin Pina scores first FIFA World Cup goal for Cape Verde versus Uruguay

Cape Verde scored a historic first goal at the World Cup during the Group H match against Uruguay in Miami on Sunday.

Midifelder Kevin Pina stood on top of a free kick in the 21st minute and fired it wide into the left corner of Uruguay’s goal to beat custodian Fernando Muslera. He also squeezed his shot between the two-man wall in front of him, set up by Maxi Araujo and Federico Vinas.

With just over half a million inhabitants, Cape Verde is the third smallest country to participate in the quadrennial competition, after Curaçao and Iceland.

Cape Verde had frustrated Spain in the opening round match, keeping it at 0-0, with goalkeeper Vozinha producing saves in the second half.
