Cape Verde holds Uruguay to a draw at 2026 FIFA World Cup; URU vs CPV player ratings

Cape Verde put in another impressive performance to hold Uruguay to a 2-2 draw in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Group H match played at the Miami Stadium on Sunday.

Kevin Pina gave the debuting nation a surprise lead after his free-kick went through the Uruguayan wall into the bottom right corner.

However, Uruguay scored twice in the closing stages of the first half, with Maxi Araujo and Agustin Canobbio finding the back of the net.

But Cape Verde weren’t done yet as Helio Varela took advantage of a defensive error to score his first international goal just three minutes after coming on. A poor back pass from Mathias Olivera was intercepted by Varela, who cleared the ball away from advancing goalkeeper Fernando Muslera before sending it into an empty net.

The result gives Cape Verde its second point of the season after holding European champions Spain to a goalless draw in the opening match.
