Who is Finn Surman, goalscorer for New Zealand vs Egypt at the 2026 World Cup?


Finn Surman scored the opening goal for New Zealand in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Group G match against Egypt at BC Place in Vancouver on Sunday.

The defender remained unmarked during a corner and headed in Tim Payne’s cross in the 15th minute.

The 22-year-old plies his trade for Portland Timbers in Major League Soccer, where he joined from Wellington Phoenix in 2024. He has made 54 appearances for the team, including 46 in the league, and is yet to score for them.

The Cardiff-born player has been capped 21 times by the All Whites since his debut in June 2023 and has scored three international goals. He was also part of the country’s squad for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and won the 2023/24 OFC Nations Cup with the team.
