Iran went toe-to-toe against Belgium to force a 0-0 draw in the Group G match of the 2026 World Cup in Los Angeles on Sunday.
Mehdi Taremi even found the net in the 25th minute after a set piece, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Iran really took control of the match after Belgian defender Nathan Ngoy was sent off for a foul on Taremi in the second half.
During the six World Cup editions, Iran has won only three times in eighteen matches.
The country’s first victory at the World Cup came in the 1998 edition, when it defeated the United States 2–1. He had to wait twenty years for his second victory, against Morocco.
Iran went on to win the 2022 World Cup again, recording a 2-1 victory over Wales.
However, despite the three victories, Iran has never progressed from the group stage of a World Cup.
With the tournament expanding to 48 teams, the Asian heavyweight finally has a chance to advance to the round of 32, with even the top eight third-place teams advancing to the knockouts.
