FIFA World Cup 2026 Group J qualifying scenarios explained: Argentina through to knockouts

Argentina have won Group J at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after recording two wins in their first two matches.

The defending champions defeated Algeria 3-0 in the opening match before beating Austria 2-0 on Monday, with Lionel Messi bagging all five goals.

Meanwhile, Algeria kept their knockout hopes alive later in the day after coming from behind to beat debutant Jordan 2-1.

Points table

Position Team Played wins Pulls To lose GD Points
1. Argentina 2 2 0 0 +5 6
2. Austria 2 1 0 1 0 3
3. Algeria 2 1 0 1 -2 3
4. Jordan 2 0 0 2 -3 0

Qualification Scenarios:

Argentina has six points after two rounds and none of the other three teams in the group can now finish above the South American team.

While Algeria or Austria can finish with six points, Argentina has the head-to-head advantage over both teams.

Algeria will take on Austria in the final match, and a win for both sides will take them to six points and help them qualify as the second-placed team.

If the match ends in a draw, Austria will advance due to a better goal difference, while Algeria will be in third place and in a good position to qualify as one of the eight best-placed teams.

Meanwhile, Jordan has been eliminated from the competition after two defeats and will face Argentina in his final match.
