Last night I shared the shelter with two section hikers and a weekender. This morning, the weekender immediately apologized for not getting my bag of food out of the bear box. Completely understandable, since I couldn’t tell when I planned to get up. After a nice morning chat about coffee, digestion and plans, we all went on our way.
I knew from the beginning that the day was going to be a struggle. My pace for the first hour didn’t even reach two miles per hour. Upon reaching a flat section, I decided to pick up the pace and barely managed 2.5 mph. I was clearly in fight mode, so I approached Kate. She planned to meet me tomorrow. By having a better idea of arrival time, I was able to see how much wiggle room I have.
The trail stayed close to the water, crossing streams and paralleling the Housatonic River for a short time. The hills weren’t bad, but I just had no energy. Looking back, there are many options with cause. Wasn’t it really a break during the break? Skip dinner? Being sleep deprived? The answer is probably: Yes!
Kate called me again and we won’t see each other until 10 a.m. That means I can go four miles until tomorrow morning. Instead of stopping at Shaker Campsite, I stopped short at N. Mt Wilcox. The year has been dry and the stream next to the shelter remains the same, not even a puddle. Fortunately, I brought water. Probably due to lack of water, I have the shelter to spend the night.
